McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Program

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Program is used to serve homeless children and youth and address the problems that they face when enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school. If you are the parent of a school-age child without permanent housing, your child has the right to go to school. The purpose of this program is to

  • To ensure that homeless children and youth have access to the same free, appropriate public education, including a public preschool education, as other children.

  • To provide homeless children and youth the same access to the challenging student academic achievement standards to which all students are held.

What does it mean?

  • Someone staying at a temporary living place, such as a shelter or hotel

  • Youth who is not living with a parent or guardian.

  • Someone who spends nights in a place not meant for sleeping like a car or condemned building.

  • Not having a fixed, regular, or adequate place to live including too many people in one place with not enough room or temporarily staying with friends or family due to financial hardship.
