🌟 Native American Heritage Month - Person of the Day: Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord 🌟
Today we honor Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord, the first Navajo woman to become a board-certified surgeon. Born in 1958 in Crownpoint, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation, Dr. Alvord is a trailblazer who blends traditional Navajo healing practices with Western medicine, creating a holistic approach to patient care.
Dr. Alvord grew up deeply connected to her Navajo heritage. She studied at Dartmouth College, where she was one of only a handful of Native American students, earning her degree in psychology. She later attended Stanford University School of Medicine, breaking barriers as a Native American woman in the medical field.
Her work as a surgeon is groundbreaking not only because of her skill but also her dedication to treating patients with respect for their cultural values. Dr. Alvord incorporates Navajo teachings, such as harmony and balance, into her medical practice. She believes that emotional and spiritual health are integral to physical healing and often works with traditional healers to create comprehensive care plans.
Dr. Alvord is also an author, sharing her experiences in her memoir, The Scalpel and the Silver Bear. In it, she discusses her journey through medicine, the challenges she faced, and her commitment to healing in a way that honors her Navajo culture.

🌟 Native American Month Person of the Day: Mary Golda Ross 🌟
Today we honor Mary Golda Ross, a trailblazer in STEM and the first Native American female engineer! A proud Cherokee Nation citizen, Ross was born in 1908 in Park Hill, Oklahoma, into a family that cherished education and achievement.
📚 Educational Excellence:
Ross earned her mathematics degree from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah at just 20 years old and later obtained a master’s degree in mathematics from Colorado State Teachers College.
🚀 Aerospace Pioneer:
In 1942, Ross joined the prestigious Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. She became a key figure in the classified "Skunk Works" division, where she worked on top-secret projects, including the development of interplanetary space probes and innovations that supported space exploration.
🌌 Advancing Frontiers:
Ross contributed to the design of missile systems and worked on early studies for spacecraft like the Apollo program. Her work played a critical role in shaping the future of space exploration.
📖 Advocate for Education:
After retiring, Ross became a vocal advocate for encouraging young women and Native Americans to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
💫 Mary Golda Ross broke barriers and paved the way for countless others. Her brilliance and determination remind us of the boundless potential of perseverance and knowledge!

🌟 Person of the Day: Eliza “Lyda” Burton Conley 🌟
Standing before the Supreme Court, Eliza “Lyda” Burton Conley fought to protect her ancestors’ burial ground, becoming the third woman and the first Native American to argue a case before the nation’s highest court. Known as the Guardian of the Huron Indian Cemetery, Conley’s battle was not just legal—it was deeply personal.
Born between 1868 and 1869 on the Wyandotte Reservation in Kansas, Conley was a trailblazer long before women could vote. She was a lawyer, educator, telegraph operator, and Sunday school teacher. Determined to safeguard the cemetery where her mother, sister, and hundreds of Wyandotte ancestors rested, she built “Fort Conley” at its entrance with her sister Helena. Armed with a shotgun, they guarded the cemetery day and night, refusing to let development erase their history.
In 1910, Conley argued her case before the Supreme Court, defending the Wyandotte’s treaty rights. Though she lost the case, her unwavering dedication inspired change. Thanks to her efforts, the cemetery was protected in 1913 by Senator Charles Curtis and later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. In 2017, it became a National Historic Landmark, ensuring its preservation forever.
Eliza Conley’s courage and determination remind us of the power of standing up for what’s right, no matter the odds. She rests today in the Huron Indian Cemetery alongside her sister and the ancestors she fought so fiercely to protect.

🌟 Person of the Day: Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte 🌟
Today, we honor Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, a trailblazer in medicine and a devoted advocate for her community. Born on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska in 1865, Dr. Picotte made history as the first Native American woman in the United States to earn a medical degree.
After graduating a year early from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania at just 24 years old, she chose to return home where she became the sole physician for over 1,200 people across the Omaha and nearby Winnebago Tribes, covering a vast territory of more than 400 miles. Her passion for her community led to her crowning achievement in 1913: the opening of the first privately funded hospital on a reservation. This hospital welcomed all who needed care, Native and non-Native alike.
Beyond her role as a physician, Dr. Picotte was an outspoken activist for her people, traveling to Washington, D.C., to fight for Omaha land rights. She overcame countless obstacles as both a Native American and a woman in her era, proving that resilience and determination could defy the limits imposed by society.
Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte’s legacy reminds us of the power of giving back to one’s community and the extraordinary impact of serving others. 💙

Hunkpapa Lakota Leader, Medicine Man, & Defender of His People
Today, we honor Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake), the revered Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux leader, strategist, and spiritual figure who fiercely defended his people and culture. Known for his profound wisdom and courage, Sitting Bull united the Lakota tribes to resist U.S. government policies that threatened their land and way of life. His leadership was crucial at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, where he and his people successfully defended their territory against General Custer's forces.
Sitting Bull was not only a warrior but also a visionary and spiritual leader, guiding his people through one of the most challenging periods in their history. Despite facing relentless pressure, he remained committed to protecting his community’s freedom, culture, and beliefs. In later years, he toured briefly with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, sharing Native American culture with audiences worldwide. He eventually returned to Standing Rock, remaining a powerful symbol of resistance and resilience until his passing.

Today, we honor Wilma Mankiller, an incredible leader and advocate for Native American communities! Wilma Mankiller was the first woman elected as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, serving from 1985 to 1995. Her work left a lasting impact on Native American rights and community development.
