Black History Month Person of the Day: Bayard Rustin Today, we honor Bayard Rustin, a brilliant strategist and tireless advocate for civil rights, nonviolence, and LGBTQ+ rights. Though often working behind the scenes, Rustin was the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. A devoted pacifist, Rustin studied Gandhian nonviolence and introduced these principles to the civil rights movement. He was also a key advisor to Dr. King, helping shape his philosophy of peaceful resistance. Despite facing discrimination for being openly gay, Rustin never wavered in his fight for justice. In 2013, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing his invaluable contributions to civil rights and human dignity. Bayard Rustin’s legacy reminds us that true change often comes from those willing to stand firm in their beliefs, no matter the cost. #BlackHistoryMonth #BayardRustin #CivilRights #LGBTQHistory #Nonviolence

Black History Month Person of the Day: Gordon Parks Today, we celebrate Gordon Parks, a visionary photographer, filmmaker, and writer whose work captured the essence of the African American experience. As the first Black staff photographer for Life magazine, Parks used his camera as a tool for social change, documenting poverty, racism, and the civil rights movement with striking and emotional imagery. Beyond photography, Parks made history as the first Black director of a major Hollywood film with Shaft (1971), helping to shape the Blaxploitation genre. His storytelling extended to literature as well, with books like The Learning Tree, which he later adapted into a film—becoming the first African American to direct a film for a major studio. Through his art, Gordon Parks gave a voice to the unheard and shined a light on the injustices of his time. His legacy continues to inspire photographers, filmmakers, and activists today. #BlackHistoryMonth #GordonParks #PhotographyForChange #CivilRights #ArtAsActivism
