🌟 Native American Heritage Month: Person of the Day 🌟 Today we celebrate Maria Tallchief, a proud member of the Osage Nation, not only as America’s first prima ballerina but also as one of the most influential ballerinas in history. She earned international acclaim as the first American ballerina to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet and made history as the first American to perform at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Refusing to change her name to sound more “European,” she proudly represented her heritage and broke barriers for Native American and American dancers alike. After retiring from the stage, Tallchief continued her legacy as the founder and artistic director of the Chicago City Ballet. Her lasting impact on ballet earned her the National Medal for the Arts and posthumous induction into the National Native American Hall of Fame. A true trailblazer, Maria Tallchief will forever be remembered for her strength, grace, and dedication to her Osage heritage and the art of ballet. ✨ Let’s celebrate her legacy!

🌟 Native American Heritage Month - Person of the Day 🌟 Today, we celebrate the legendary Jim Thorpe (Sac and Fox Nation), a multi-talented athlete who rose to global fame. Brought up in Oklahoma under the native name Wa-Tho-Huk, meaning “Bright Path,” Thorpe competed at the highest levels across multiple sports well into the late 1920s. 🏆 Thorpe won gold in the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympics, despite competing with mismatched shoes he found in the trash after his were stolen. His grit and talent helped him overcome the odds, and he made history that day. ⚾ Thorpe continued to shine in professional sports, playing baseball, basketball, and excelling as one of the first stars of professional American football. With the Canton Bulldogs, who claimed the title of "world champions" in 1916, 1917, and 1919, Thorpe was instrumental in founding the National Football League (NFL) and served as its first president in 1920. 🌟 After an athletic career that lasted into his 40s, Thorpe turned to Hollywood, acting in over 50 films, where he often portrayed Native American roles. His legacy endures as a symbol of resilience, athleticism, and achievement across generations. Join us in honoring Jim Thorpe, whose "Bright Path" continues to inspire!

📣 We’re honored to welcome Courtney John, Adrian Jones, and Michaela Richbourg from the Chickasaw Nation today! They’re here to teach our students how to play the traditional game of stickball. The Chickasaw Nation partners with schools bringing Native American history and culture to life through interactive experiences like this one. 🎉 About Stickball: Often called the "little brother of war," stickball is one of the oldest sports in North America, historically used to resolve disputes, build community, and sharpen physical skills. Players use handcrafted sticks with netted hoops on the ends to catch and throw a small ball, aiming to score points by hitting a target on the opponent’s goalpost. This challenging game teaches coordination, teamwork, and resilience, connecting generations through shared tradition. Thank you to the Chickasaw Nation for helping our students learn more about this incredible heritage! #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #chickasaw

🌟 Native American Heritage Month: Person of the Day 🌟 Today, we celebrate John Bennett Herrington, a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and the first enrolled member of a Native American tribe to venture into space! 🚀 In 2002, as a NASA astronaut and U.S. Naval Aviator, he made history, taking with him the Chickasaw Nation flag on his 13-day journey to space. During the mission Herrington performed three spacewalks, totaling 19 hours and 55 minutes.
