Mid-Del Virtual Academy Teachers have designated office hours for communication. They will return messages during those hours.

Students will access the curriculum, assignments, and activities through Canvas, which is a learning management system that all Mid-Del students use.
Will students be required to attend ‘live’ (synchronous), online classes, at specific times?
Yes, students will be required to log in to live online classes at specific times each week for whole group, small group, and individual instruction. The synchronous lessons will be conducted through Google meetings, with the teacher communicating the specific times. These meetings will occur during normal school hours.
Will students have independent (asynchronous) online activities and assignments to complete?
Yes, students will have access to assignments through Canvas. Canvas is the learning platform where students keep track of assignments and submit work. Class announcements, learning videos, SeeSaw activities, online textbooks, Lexia lessons, along with many other online resources are located in the student’s Canvas portal.
How is attendance taken?
Attendance will be taken through a combination of attending synchronous (live) online classes and asynchronous work on assignments that are submitted on time.
How much time will my child spend on virtual learning each day?
Students will have approximately one to two hours of synchronous learning time with the teacher each day and another two to three hours of activities and assignments to complete and submit. This will fluctuate depending on the grade level and subject matter.
What is the role of the parent/guardian?
Parents and guardians are important partners in all students’ academic success. It is even more important in the virtual classroom. Students in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade will need assistance from a parent or guardian most of the time. Students in these grades are not developmentally ready to be independent learners. Fourth and fifth grade students will need a parent or guardian to continually monitor their learning. Elementary students need help from a parent or guardian to stay organized and focused in the virtual classroom.
Will my child be required to take standardized tests?
Yes, all 3rd - 5th grade Mid-Del students must complete the state-mandated assessments for elementary. Mid-Del students in K - 5th are also required to take benchmark tests at the end of each quarter and STAR reading and math tests three times per year. The MDVA teacher will communicate with parents about locations, dates, times, and accommodations for testing.
What if my child has an Individualized Education Plan or a 504 Accommodations Plan?
Parents of students with disabilities or 504 plans will need to contact their child’s home site or the Mid-Del Special Services Department to determine which virtual program is best for their student.
Will my student be able to participate in extracurricular activities at the school site?
No, only secondary school students can participate in OSSAA approved activities.
What if MDVA is not a good fit for my child?
Students may transfer from MDVA to their home school site for in-person learning at any time. However, they would not be able to move back to MDVA once they have returned to in-person learning.
Can a student’s eligibility or placement in MDVA be revoked?
Yes, if a student is not making adequate progress, has too many absences, is not submitting work, or not attending synchronous learning sessions, they may be dropped from the virtual classroom and moved back to in-person learning at their home school site. At the first signs of any of the above-mentioned reasons occurring, the teacher will be in contact with the parent to develop a plan of improvement and the student will be placed on a watchlist. If the student does not meet the requirements of the plan of improvement, the parent will be contacted and the student may be placed at the school site for the remainder of the year.
