Secondary MDVA Q&A (2023-2024 School Year)

What is the Secondary Mid-Del Virtual Academy (MDVA)?
MDVA allows students to customize their learning experience to fit their personal style and individual needs. Students may choose a fully-virtual learning program, blended that will allow students to do some coursework virtually and in person or a hybrid-learning program that will combine virtual learning and extracurricular activities. The hybrid-learning option allows students to enroll in virtual classes and still attend traditional classes on campus for certain electives sanctioned by OSSAA.

Who can participate?
Any 6th through 12th grade student who is enrolled in Mid-Del Public Schools and is NOT an Out of District Transfer.

Will Middle School students have core classes and elective classes?
Yes, students will be enrolled in four core classes and two elective classes.

Do virtual students have the same school calendar as in-person students?
Yes, MDVA students follow the same Mid-Del calendar and schedule.

Will students still be allowed to attend extracurricular activities?
Yes, students will still receive a school ID from their home school that will allow them to attend extracurricular activities.

Can students be in MDVA and enroll in concurrent classes?
Yes, students can enroll in concurrent classes at Rose State

Can students participate in Ticket to Rose after graduation?
Yes, all Mid-Del graduates qualify for Ticket to Rose

Will the district provide a device/computer?
Yes, the district will provide the device - Chromebooks.

Will the district provide a mobile hotspot for internet access?
No, the district will not be able to provide a mobile hotspot. Parents/guardians will need to provide high-speed internet for connectivity.

How and when do we select MDVA?
The MDVA application will open online Monday, April 3, 2023. The MDVA application is separate from the official enrollment form for Mid-Del Public Schools. If your student is NEW to Mid-Del, there is a link in the online enrollment form to complete the application. If your student is a RETURNING student, please complete the application on the website.  Notification of status will be sent to Parents/Guardians by the week of May 8th, 2023.

Is space limited for MDVA?
Space is limited because of staffing availability. A waitlist will be created once we have reached capacity.

Who teaches Secondary MDVA students?
Edgenuity is the standard aligned video-based curriculum used. Certified Mid-Del teachers will monitor student’s work, provide Google Meets when students are struggling, need help or tutoring.

What will MDVA students study?
MDVA students will be taught the same grade-appropriate subjects as in-person students in Mid-Del Schools. Teachers will follow the Oklahoma Academic Standards and Mid-Del board approved curriculum. Students will access the curriculum, assignments and activities through Edgenuity.

What if MDVA is not a good fit for my child?
Students will have a 10 day period at the beginning of each semester to go back to In Person Learning. After the 10 day period we require the student to complete the remainder of the semester and they will be able to return to their school site the following semester.

How is attendance taken?
Attendance will be taken by students logging in daily to their courses.

How much time will my child spend on virtual learning each day?
Each subject area will require approximately 1 hour of activities per school day.  Parents will need to create a schedule for their child that incorporates approximately 6 hours of learning time every day.  Approximately 30 hours per week of learning time will be needed each week to complete required learning activities.

What is the role of the parent/guardian?
Parents and guardians are important partners in all students’ academic success. It is even more important in the virtual classroom. Parents/guardians should take a hands-on, active role in their child’s daily education.  Adults should create a daily schedule for students to complete their school work that fits within the family structure.  Parents and guardians should closely monitor a student’s progress and communicate with the teachers on a regular basis. It is important that parents help students stay focused and on a routine schedule to minimize distractions.  Parents/guardians will need to provide transportation for any on-campus activities.

Will my child be required to take standardized tests?
The school site will communicate with parents about dates, times, and accommodations for testing.

What if my child has an Individualized Education Plan or a 504 Accommodations Plan?
Parents of students with disabilities or 504 plans will need to contact their child’s home site or the Mid-Del Special Services Department to determine if this virtual program is best for their student.

Will my student be able to participate in extracurricular activities at the school site?
Yes, secondary school students can participate in OSSAA approved activities and be a part of clubs and school organizations.

Is this program a good fit for students who are homeschooled?
Yes! Families who choose to homeschool may enroll in MDVA while maintaining control of their child’s at-home learning environment. MDVA offers board-approved middle, and high school curriculum that is comprehensive and aligned to Oklahoma’s state standards. Grades and transcripts will be issued by Mid-Del Public Schools.

When will parents/guardians be notified if their child’s application for MDVA has been approved?
Parents/Guardians will be notified the week of May 8, 2023, as the status of their application for Fall of 2023.

Can a student’s eligibility or placement in MDVA be revoked?
If your student has 15 or more absences or has a failing grade for any course they will be denied for the following semester. If your student has 10 consecutive days absent they will be dropped from the district.
